In 1976, Dorn made his film debut in the Academy Award winning film Rocky (1976), in the uncredited role of Apollo Creed’s bodyguard. Other film roles include Jagged Edge (1985), Ted 2 (2015), Ali (2001), and The Santa Clause 2 & 3 (2002 & 2006 respectively).

Dorn received his first regular television role when cast as Officer Jebediah Turner in the crime drama series CHiPs in 1979. He had the regular role of Dr. Carver Burke in the police procedural series Castle. Dorn voiced the supervillain Prometheus/Adrian Chase in the CW series Arrow.
