Anime or Japanese animation is one of the most popular cultural phenomena in North America. Since the 1960’s, starting with the English adaptations of Astro Boy and Speed Racer, the popularity of Anime continued to grow in the decades that followed as new Anime TV series and movies were introduced to an ever growing North American fan base. This emerging fan base shortly began to identify themselves as « otakus » – fans of not only Anime, but of Manga (Japanese comic books), and Japanese video games. Today, Anime can be seen on local TV, movie theatres and popular streaming sites like Netflix and Crunchyroll. It is also celebrated through the large number of Anime conventions held every year, where legions of fans dress up or “cosplay” their favorite Anime, Manga, or Video Game characters.
Montreal Comiccon will celebrate this popular visual medium by having several dedicated Anime and Manga programming tracks that will appeal to both the otaku and non-otaku. These programming tracks will include screenings of a wide selection of Anime titles, discussion panels devoted to Anime, Manga, or Cosplay, and several fun filled Anime themed contests!
