Montreal (Quebec), July 10, 2016 – The 8th edition of the Montreal Comiccon, which took place July 8 to 10 at Palais des congrès, received a record attendance of 56,000 attendees, brought together by their shared passion for pop culture. Thousands of cosplayers dressed up for the event, impersonating a galaxy of characters like Mr. Spock; Steven Spielberg and his old pal, E.T.; The Hulk; The Mask and Cameron Diaz replicating their famous dance; Ace Ventura; Wolverine; Cinderella's evil step sisters; a universe of Star Wars icons; Deadpool; and Harley Quinn, to only name a few.
The event was filled with moving moments and unforgettable encounters. Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre launched the festivities Friday afternoon with a jovial ribbon-cutting ceremony. His presence did not go unnoticed, as a multitude of fans approached him to shake hands and take photographs. On Saturday, Mr. Coderre hosted an official gold book signing ceremony at Montreal's City Hall, in which he personally welcomed celebrity Comiccon guests William Shatner (Star Trek: TOS), Manu Bennett (Spartacus), Brent Spiner (Star Trek: TNG), Michael Ironside (Turbo Kid), Elias Toufexis (Deus Ex), Darryl McDaniels (Run-DMC), Peter Cullen (Transformers) and John Barrowman (Doctor Who).
Star Trek fans were treated to a special event to mark the 50th anniversary of the series that launched the mythological adventures of the Starship Enterprise and its valiant crew. Legendary actors William Shatner (Captain Kirk), Brent Spiner (Commander Data), and Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway) took to the stage to the delight of the crowd. Fans were deeply moved by an introductory tribute video to the late beloved actors Leonard Nimoy (the original Spock) et Anton Yelchin (Chekov, in the J.J. Abrams films). The event will forever be engraved in the memory of Montreal Trekkies.
Video games occupied a privileged place in this 8th edition, with powerhouse names like PlayStation, Warner Brother Games, BioWare, Eidos et Square Enix. The Independent Games Play Zone, hosted by Multijoueur, rocked non-stop throughout the weekend with an army of avid gamers at the consoles. The presence of video games will only continue to grow in future Comiccon editions.
In addition to the ever-popular Artists' Alley, Autograph Zone and Photo Ops Booth, the entire 5th floor of the Palais des congrès was packed with activities and panels, including a generous conference by actor Cary Elwes (Robin Hood: Men in Tights, The Princess Bride, Glory). The attendance to these activities was such that a second main hall was added to accommodate the high demand. Other outstanding moments featured the incredibly popular Masquerade, the OVMF film music concert series, a special wrestling tribute event with Ric Flair et Eric Bischoff, the Obscura cult film festival, and gladiator combats in a series of mini-events appropriately named "All roads lead to Rome".
Montreal Comiccon would like to thank its partners and sponsors, who helped make the 2016 event a success beyond all expectations. The 9th edition will take place July 7 to 9, 2017 at Palais des congrès.
Live long and prosper!
